Catalina Showing Off Her Hardware |
ACityDiscount is proud to announce that our Marketing Coordinator, Catalina Franco, came in 2nd place in her division when she participated in the Miles-4-Smiles 5K race on June 8, 2013. She placed 29th overall with over 200 runners in the 5K race, which took place at Tribble Mill Park in Grayson, Georgia.
Catalina began running less than a year ago, but in that short time, she has grown to love the sport. She enjoys the competitive nature of racing and the camaraderie she shares with fellow runners. Having never participated in sports growing up, Catalina feels as though this is her time to make her mark on a competitive sport.
This particular race had special meaning to Catalina. The purpose of this race was for more than the sport of running, it was organized by The Amanda Riley Foundation in order to raise funds to benefit and support children and families of children battling cancer. The foundation was established to honor the memory of Amanda Riley, a 17-year-old girl that battled cancer for 405 days before passing away in 2010. Amanda was an avid runner and a member of the Brookwood High School Cross Country and Basketball Teams.
After her passing, Amanda’s family created the foundation and organized the yearly race in order to keep Amanda’s memory alive. Their goal is to do everything possible to bring a SMILE to a child's face, while they are in the midst of their battle - during their toughest times. They hope to accomplish this by offering special items that will comfort and distract these children while receiving treatment. They also strive to provide assistance to the families of these children in an effort to ease some of the burdens caused by having a child with cancer.
We at ACityDiscount are extremely proud of Catalina’s accomplishments as a runner and will continue to support her in her efforts to become a better runner and athlete. We also wish all the success to The Amanda Riley Foundation in their efforts to provide comfort to those families dealing with cancer.
