As a supporter of our local community and its associates, ACityDiscount sponsored our IT Manager’s son’s high school baseball team. John Veldsma’s son, Harrison Veldsma plays for the Walton Raiders, a region 5, class AAAAAA high school baseball team. Harrison has established himself as one of the top two bullpen pitchers for the Raiders. As a right handed pitcher, Harrison helped lead their relief corps this season. As a skilled relief pitcher, Harrison is often used in tight situations. One of the many highlights from Harrison's fantastic season was closing game 1 and game 2 of the second round playoffs against visiting Norcross High School, where he earned a win and a save that night.
The Raiders positioned themselves very well for the state finals with a 2013 season record of 26 – 11. They went as far as the state semifinals (final 4) in the entire state of Georgia! Walton ended their long run for the state title in a third decisive game against Roswell High School, coming back from a 7-2 deficit to lose 7-6. The tying run was on third base, but a strikeout by the batter ended the game and Walton’s season. Three of the final four teams were from region 5 – Milton, Walton and Roswell.
The Raiders are lead by Coach Shane Amos. Amos is in his 26th year at Walton High School as a teacher and a coach. He is in his 11th year as Varsity head baseball coach for the Raiders. In addition to baseball, he is also an assistant coach for Varsity football. In 2007, Coach Amos was named the Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year and also the Marietta Daily Journal Coach of the Year.
ACityDiscount is proud of the many accomplishments of not only Harrison Veldsma, but also the victorious Walton Raiders. They showed strength, determination and grace with all their many wins and few loses. It was a long-fought season full of highs and a lows. We are looking forward to Harrison’s Senior year and yet another successful season in 2013-2014!
