History of Tex’s Tacos
Tex’s Tacos, sometimes dubbed the ‘Antonio Banderas’ of food trucks, was started by Texas native, Mac Helms in 2011. The food truck was one of the first in Atlanta after relaxed regulations allowed food trucks in the city. Shortly after making its debut, Mac hired Jeff Latham as a General Manager. After two years in business, Mac decided to return home to Texas and Tex’s Tacos became available. Jeff bought the company in 2014. He and his wife Katherine now run the operation. They now have two Tex’s Tacos trucks and opening their first brick and mortar is in the works. They love what they do and believe their dedication to making customers smile and high-quality ingredients sets them apart from the rest.
Menu Highlights
The menu features a variety of tacos including chicken fresca, pork al pastor, carne asada, pulled pork BBQ – showing off southern flare and their veggie tacos and quesadillas. Jeff’s favorite is the chicken fresco taco, which consists of honey lime brined chicken topped with homemade salsa roja , pico de gallo, cheese and cilantro. But we can’t talk about the menu without mentioning their famous lime fries. These straight-cut french fries are topped with homemade lime salt giving them a sweet, salty and tangy flavor. Want those fries loaded? You can get them topped with guacamole, pico de gallo, grilled onions, queso fresco, fresh jalapeño, & cilantro; served with homemade salsa roja.
Why Food Trucks?
Jeff’s favorite thing about operating a mobile kitchen, a.k.a. food truck, is that every day is a new adventure. “We get to travel around the city serving different places and events every day,” says Jeff, “we get to go out and see the exciting things happening in the community.” Tex’s Tacos also caters private events including weddings, corporate events (they catered ACityDiscount’s last lunch event in November 2018) and parties.
Working with Brian from ACityDiscount to Outfit the Trucks and Commissary Kitchen
Jeff discovered ACityDiscount through a quick Google search and also through other food truck owners in the Atlanta area. He frequents the showroom and works with Brian Dunfies of the ACityDiscount sales team to purchase a number of smallwares, and has also made larger purchases including a commercial oven, flat top griddle, charbroiler and commercial refrigeration units. “Brian at the front desk is super helpful,” according to Jeff. He goes on to say, “My favorite thing about shopping with ACityDiscount is the friendly people, the variety and the prices are on par with what I could find online; but with the customer service, quick delivery or being able to carry it out with me that day.”
